Color change wrap finishes explained
Color change wraps come in five main finishes: gloss looks like fresh paint, satin has a soft modern sheen, matte has no shine at all, metallic adds flake or a brushed-metal look, and color-shift changes hue with the viewing angle. We install 3M 2080 film, which is warranted for up to 8 years on vertical panels and up to 3 on hoods and roofs.
The five finishes
| Finish | Look | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Gloss | Paint-like shine | Most forgiving to wash and the closest to factory paint. |
| Satin | Soft sheen, modern | Hides minor dust and fingerprints better than gloss. |
| Matte | Flat, no reflection | Don't wax or polish it; use matte-safe cleaners. |
| Metallic | Metal flake or brushed look | Often carries a shorter rated life than standard colors. |
| Color-shift | Changes color by angle | The most eye-catching option; also a specialty film. |
How long color change film lasts
Manufacturers rate life by color and by panel position. 3M rates its 2080 color change line for up to 8 years on vertical panels and up to 3 years on horizontal surfaces such as hoods and roofs, and guarantees clean removal within that period. Warranty terms vary by color and finish, so we give you the rating for the exact film we quote. Real-world life depends on sun, salt, and how the vehicle is washed.
How many colors are there?
A lot. 3M's 2080 line alone offers nearly 100 colors, patterns, and textures. As a 3M-exclusive shop, we bring physical 3M samples so you can see them in daylight before you choose.
Can I add graphics on top?
Yes. Many businesses change a fleet of white vans to their brand color with color change film, then add printed logos and contact details on top.
Caring for each finish
- Hand wash with a mild soap; avoid brush car washes.
- Never wax or polish matte or satin films.
- Rinse road salt off often in winter. See our winter care guide.
